Back for 2025, a fantastic journey right up to the northern tip of the spectacular Highlands and a rare opportunity to visit two of the most northerly British Isles. Orkney is a group of 70 islands, the closest of which is just 6 miles off the Scottish Coast. The Shetlands actually lie a fraction closer to Norway. Both have amazing prehistoric remains with a strong Viking legacy. Your journey includes a 2-night island cruise aboard Northlink ferries (no bunk beds!)
ITINERARY
DAY 1 Travel north of the border to your overnight hotel in Dumfries DBB
DAY 2 Continue travelling north via Pitlochry to overnight in the Cairngorms, the UK’s largest National Park DBB
DAY 3 Onwards via Inverness, in the Heart of the Scottish Highlands, to the far north town of Thurso with its pretty beach for 2-night stay. DBB
DAY 4 – Castle of Mey & John O’Groats – Visit the Castle of Mey, the beloved residence of the Queen Mother, on the magnificent north coast of Caithness.
Light lunch included today. Onto the top
of mainland Britain, John O’Groats is best known as the end point of the 874 mile
trek from Land’s End
DAY 5 – Orkney – Morning crossing from Scrabster to Stromness on Orkney where, with a local guide, you will explore Orkney’s mainland including Skara Brae, the stone Ring of Brodgar, the Italian Chapel and Scapa Flow where German battleships were scuttled in WW1. Included dinner in a local restaurant before overnight Northlink Ferry sailing to Lerwick. Cabins are en-suite DAY 6 – Shetland – Breakfast on board and a guided excursion of Shetland’s scenic mainland including Jarlshof Viking Settlement with tea & coffee stop, time in Lerwick and a visit to Carol’s Shetland Ponies and picturesque Scalloway. Re-join the ferry for dinner on board and overnight crossing to Aberdeen
DAY 7 – Dundee – Breakfast on board, dock in Aberdeen and travel to the fine City of Dundee with its revitalised waterfront. The
impressive V&A Dundee opened in September 2018 as the first design museum in Scotland (entrance FOC – special exhibitions chargeable). Overnight in Bannockburn near Stirling DBB
DAY 8 – Edinburgh – Final day in Scotland and what better than to spend some time in the truly delightful capital. Optional guided tour. Continue to your final overnight near Newcastle DBB
DAY 9 After breakfast, it’s time to head south after your epic Scottish adventure. Arrive home during the evening
